Similarity Index

JPSIM screens 100% of submissions for plagiarism using Turnitin similarity-detection software. The journal's screening threshold is an overall similarity of no more than 19%. Editors assess the nature, extent, source and context of overlap, including quoted material, references, standard methods, preprints and the authors’ previous work.

The Turnitin screening is automated, but the decision is not. An editor reads every similarity report in full before acting on it, and no manuscript is accepted, returned or rejected on the similarity score alone. Where the report raises a concern, the editor may ask the authors to explain or revise the text before the manuscript goes further.

Plagiarism, unattributed copying, close paraphrasing, duplicate publication and inappropriate reuse of text, data or images may result in correction, rejection, retraction and notification of relevant institutions. Authors must cite and quote sources properly and disclose related manuscripts. The similarity percentage does not replace qualitative editorial judgment.
